How this currency converter works

The converter multiplies your amount by the exchange rate between the two currencies. Because rates are published against the US dollar, a conversion such as euro to yen is done in two steps: euro to dollars, then dollars to yen. The result is shown with the rate used and a small table of common amounts so you can compare quickly.

Good to know before you send or exchange money

  • Mid-market rate. This is the fair midpoint rate. It is a great reference, but not what you will always be offered.
  • Fees and margins. Banks, exchange companies and money-transfer apps each use their own rate and sometimes add a flat fee. Compare the final amount that will arrive, not just the headline rate.
  • Timing. Rates move through the day. This tool updates once daily, so use it as a guide for planning, not for exact settlement.

Need the rate for a specific pair? Try USD to EUR, GBP to USD, USD to INR, USD to PKR or USD to JPY.

Frequently asked questions

How often are the exchange rates updated?

The rates come from a free service that refreshes once a day. Your browser keeps a copy for a few hours so the tool loads fast and does not ask the service too often.

Why is the rate at my bank or exchange company different?

The rate shown here is the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. Banks, exchange companies and transfer apps add a margin or fee, and open-market rates can also differ from the interbank rate. Always check the exact rate and fees before you send or change money.

Does it work offline?

If you are offline the tool uses the last rates saved in your browser, or a rough built-in estimate if there is nothing saved, and tells you which one it is using.

How do I see the average rate over a week, month or year?

Open the History tab, pick the two currencies and choose 1W, 1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y or your own start and end dates. The average is shown first, with the highest, lowest and a table below.

Can I convert between two foreign currencies, like USD to SAR?

Yes. Pick any two currencies. The tool converts through the US dollar, which is how the rates are published.
