How the gold value is calculated

The calculator uses one rule: value = pure weight Γ— price of pure metal. Your weight is converted to grams, multiplied by the purity (karat Γ· 24), then by the price per gram (a tola price is divided by 11.6638, an ounce price by 31.1035). Making charges are added as a percentage of that metal value.

Karat guide

  • 24k = 99.9% pure, used for bars and coins.
  • 22k = 91.67% pure, a common choice for bridal and traditional jewellery in South Asia and the Middle East.
  • 21k = 87.5% pure, common in the Gulf and South Asia.
  • 18k = 75% pure, used for diamond and modern designs.

Tips before you buy or sell

  • Ask whether the quoted rate is for 24k or for the karat of your piece. Type the 24k rate here.
  • When selling, jewellers usually deduct wastage and do not pay back making charges, so the buyback value is lower than the figure shown with making charges.
  • Stones, pearls and enamel are weighed with the piece but are not gold. Subtract them first.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find today's gold rate?

Ask your jeweller or check a live bullion site. Rates are quoted per gram, per tola (South Asia) or per troy ounce (international markets). Choose the matching unit, type the 24 karat price in your currency, and ignore the placeholder value in the box.

How many grams are in a tola?

1 tola = 11.6638 grams (0.375 troy ounce). One troy ounce = 31.1035 grams, so an ounce is about 2.67 tola.

How is the value of 21 karat or 22 karat gold worked out?

Purity = karat Γ· 24. So 22k is 91.67% pure, 21k is 87.5% and 18k is 75%. The calculator multiplies the weight by that purity and by the 24k price.

What are making charges?

Making charges (wages) are what the jeweller adds for crafting the piece. They are often quoted as a percentage of the gold value or as a fixed amount per tola. Enter the percentage you were quoted.

Is silver worked out the same way?

Yes. Choose silver and enter the price of pure silver. Sterling-style jewellery is usually 92.5% silver, so use the purity box if you know it.

Please note: This tool does not fetch live prices. The price in the box is a placeholder you must replace with today's rate from your jeweller or a bullion site. Jewellers may also deduct wastage, which is not included.
