Your Zakat due

How this Zakat calculator works

Zakat is 2.5% of your net savings and assets once they reach the Nisab. This tool adds your cash, gold, silver, trade stock, investments, money owed to you and saved rental income, subtracts debts you owe now, and compares the result with the Nisab.

The Nisab is 52.5 tola of silver (612.36 g) or 7.5 tola of gold (87.48 g), valued at the prices you enter. One tola is 11.664 g. Because silver is cheaper, the silver Nisab is lower, so more people owe Zakat under it. Many scholars recommend it; choose gold if your scholar advises that.

The lunar year (hawl)

Zakat is due only when your wealth has stayed at or above the Nisab for one full lunar year. A lunar year is about 354 days, so your Zakat date moves roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Many people pick a fixed date such as 1 Ramadan and pay on everything they own that day. Use our Hijri date converter to find your date.

Tips

  • Update both prices to today's rate in your currency. The pre-filled numbers are only placeholders.
  • Count only what you really own and can access. Doubtful debts owed to you are not counted until received.
  • Your home, car and clothes for personal use are not Zakatable.
  • Pay it to eligible recipients such as the poor, needy and those in debt.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum wealth on which Zakat becomes due. It is 52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver or 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold. Many scholars use the silver Nisab because it is lower and benefits more people in need, while others use gold, so you can switch above. Follow the opinion of your scholar.

How much is Zakat?

Zakat is 2.5% (one-fortieth) of your net Zakatable wealth, once it stays above the Nisab for one full lunar year.

Is Zakat due on jewellery I wear?

The Hanafi school, common in South Asia, Turkey and Central Asia, says Zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery whether or not it is worn. Other schools differ for jewellery in regular use. Follow the opinion you normally follow.

Can I subtract my debts?

Yes. Debts you must repay soon, such as a loan instalment due, credit card bill or rent, are generally deducted from your Zakatable wealth. Enter only the amount you actually owe now.

Where do I get today's gold and silver price?

Check a live bullion site or your local jeweller for today's price of 24 karat gold and of silver. Choose whether the price is per gram, tola or ounce, then enter it in your own currency.

Please note: This is a calculation aid, not a fatwa. Rules differ slightly between schools of thought and for business assets. Please check with a trusted scholar if your situation is complicated.
