How this word counter works

Type or paste any text and the numbers update with every keystroke. Words are groups of characters split by spaces or line breaks, the same rule used by Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Sentences are counted by full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, and paragraphs by blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Why word and character counts matter

  • Assignments and essays: teachers often set a limit such as 500 or 1,000 words. Check before you submit instead of guessing.
  • Scholarship and job applications: many portals cut your answer off at a character limit, so test it here first.
  • Social media and SMS: a tweet is 280 characters, a single SMS is 160, and an Instagram bio is 150.
  • Speeches and presentations: speaking time at 130 words per minute helps you plan a 3 minute talk of about 390 words.

Tips for better writing

Look at the most used words list. If a word like very or really appears many times, replace some with a stronger word. Short sentences are easier to read on a phone. Common filler words such as the and and are left out of the list so you see only meaningful repeats.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter count words?

A word is any group of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. So well-known counts as one word and don't counts as one. This matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count.

Does it count spaces in the character total?

Both numbers are shown. 'Characters' includes spaces and punctuation, while 'Without spaces' leaves out spaces and line breaks. Most assignment limits and social media limits use the first number.

How is reading time worked out?

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a comfortable pace for most students reading on a phone. Speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, which is useful for speeches, presentations and viva preparation.

Is my essay or assignment saved anywhere?

No. All counting happens on your device while you type. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can safely paste private notes, application letters or drafts. The text is not even saved when you close the page.

What are the limit bars for?

Pick a target such as a tweet (280), an SMS (160) or an Instagram bio (150) and the bar shows how much room is left. It turns red when you go over, so you can trim before you post or send.
